New Music Program at Boys & Girls Club Aims to Boost Kids Confidence
CenturyLink Donation Helps Launch MusicMakers
SEBRING, Fla. - Boosting self-esteem through creating music is the goal of a new program that will soon launch at the
Boys & Girls Club of Highlands County. A $4,000 donation from CenturyLink, a leading broadband, entertainment and voice
provider, will help launch a program called MusicMakers.
Through the MusicMakers program, club members ages 6-18 will have a chance to participate in activities that will help them:
Gain basic proficiency in producing and writing music
Experience playing music in collaborative sessions
Gain an outlet for expressing themselves
Using instruments and technology purchased with the CenturyLink donation, club professionals and part-time professional music
instructors will lead club members in guitar lessons, jam sessions and song workshops. A computer server, video monitor, video camera,
microphones, headphones and audio monitors are part of the MusicMakers technology package.
"Supporting youth programs like this one is one of the most important and rewarding ways we can give back to Highlands County,"
said Brian Hamman, CenturyLink manager of market development.
The expected outcomes for children in the program are:
Increased self confidence from realizing their creative potential
Collaboration skills from playing together
Confidence in front of an audience
Taking an active role in their community's musical life
Critical thinking and listening skills
The Boys & Girls Club expects to have the MusicMakers program operating by February 2011.
